This Moon bronze, #5/12, is one of the last pieces completed before Tom Eneas passed away in June 2018. Eneas was known for carving Moon masks and they always tended to have a cheerful feel to them.

Kwakwaka'wakw children are told to be wary when around the forest and streams, lest Bakwas, or Wild Man of the Woods, tries to tempt them with his Spirit Food. If a human eats Spirit Food they will be transformed into an otherworldly being, like Bakwas.

This historic Eagle mask is approximately 140 yrs old. Surrounding the eyes are a multitude of nail holes, some with broken nails still in place & all were removed in the first 90-100 years. What purpose would so many nails have on a historic mask?
